Got bored right before the affiliate featuring raging homophobia. Information technology honestly shocks me how readers were okay with that tirade. Expert translations though!

3.5 | okay. i enjoyed this novel a lot, honestly. i love the fact that we take all the wuxia elements but also the mixture of modern mean solar day internet slang/culture - zhu yao is honestly such a good character, it's so refreshing to read about a potent, smart, and kind female character. yeah simply.
my main problem was the length of this novel - i had to take a break somewhere in the middle because it was actually, simply So Much. i definitely feel similar it'll be amend off half the length but i suppose i do due south

tl;dr: i really hate when hets add lgbtq characters for the sole purpose of a humor pause.

'My Disciple Died Nonetheless Again' is a quirky novel in a format that reminds a lot more than of a tv show of several seasons than a book. On i hand, by the separation of "missions" through the arcs, on the other paw, by a writing style that is rather visual. With its eccentric characters, popular culture references and a heavy reliance on humour over logic, it is a fun and entertaining read. For the nigh part.
Unfortunately the structure makes it feel incredibly repetetive and truly drags on, every bit every new arc comes with a setback in cultivation, new setting, characters etc, at the price of some more than character development. Unfortunately, the plot relies heavily on a master character that is goodhearted and lightheartedly violent (I gauge... it's for laughs?), but whose main attribute is the power to non modify... at all. So we take a main grapheme who is maybe not perfect, merely still sold as 'ideal person' in many ways, which leads to the read dragging on weven more than.
Coming back to it feeling like a written tv shows, rather than going towards a goal, the structure of this is more circular. Whenever one thinks at that place is some actual overarching plot, it just reverts back to some other new "mission".
Unfortunately the ending does non fix this effect with a really clever tie upward of all the events in the previous Arcs, simply instead relies on a pretty generic: "Information technology'southward all to make the world a amend place through this chosen heroine" logic. The solution relies on a pretty creepy, almost authoritarian solution, while virtually side characters are just dropped.
Leaving aside a lot of pretty offensive terminology in the treatment of both obesity and homosexuality, which are constantly playes for jokes (and for homosexuality being unnatural and a problem that needs solving.... great...), it is, if considered as one volume, really a slice of lite entertainment.
I acknowledge that nether the consitions of writing (regular updates, chapter past affiliate on a blog) of these chinese novels, information technology is perchance a bit unfair to rate this as I would a 1 book book, but after reading the works of MXTX (Mo Dao Zu Shi etc), information technology is clearly possible to withal write a plot-heavy, cohesive novel. This is is considerably less professional.
That said information technology is non horrible, I presume it is really hit or miss. If you expect a novel, even if it's comedic amusement, to have a satisfactory build upwardly and solution, then this seems indeed rather sloppy. If you are simply reading it for distraction, focusing on sense of humor, popular-civilisation references and simple characters, I am sure this has a lot of potential. I but expected a tiny piddling bit more plot and graphic symbol delelopment in a work of this length.

To exist articulate, I didn't finish this whole book. There are 12 arcs / 395 capacity full, and I got through the first half-dozen arcs / 195 chapters. Maybe I will revisit this over again someday, but the whole bicycle of reviving and removing the bug in a new mission kinda got old. To be fair, nosotros finally found out a fiddling flake more at the end of arc half dozen, and Realmspirit did promise to spill the beans after Zhu Yao's next mission, simply who knows.

Mayhap I will revisit this again someday, but the whole cycle of reviving and removing the bug in a new mission kinda got one-time. To be off-white, we finally establish out a niggling bit more at the end of arc 6, and Realmspirit did hope to spill the beans after Zhu Yao'southward next mission, but who knows.

I enjoyed seeing what kind of new form she'd return in each time. The bigender course reminded me a flake of the main character in Ranma 1/2. The dragon was probably my favorite, given how she was able to subdue all demonic beasts with her presence, including the devil-inhabited rabbit god at the end. The slice of jade rock was the near interesting, since she kept on ending up with owners she didn't care for.

I did go a boot out of the principal character'due south internal monologue. She was quite funny and had a very blunt way of putting things. I read on mainly for her and for the romance. Speaking of which, I kept waiting for the romance to get further along, and after 195 capacity in, I gave up on Zhu Yao's completely clueless master, Yu Yan. For example, run across the below interaction between them correct before I dropped, where Zhu Yao is trying to accept off his clothes and sleep with him:

Yu Yan took the outer garments, turned to expect at her unknowingly, and then approached her. His two hands brushed by the sides of her waist, forming a kabe-don posture. He gradually leaned closer… and closer…

And so…

He put his outer garment on her.

"If you wanted this mystic robe, say so directly."

Crackle.

Zhu Yao heard the sound of something shattering. That was her expressionless young maiden's middle…

She really was stupid to the point of piercing through the heaven, for believing that a certain someone could have been enlightened!

A sure main, however, stabbed her with another pocketknife with a stern await.

"I placed downwardly a special defensive formation on this mystic robe, and regular people aren't able to movement it."

Puaaah! A steel knife stabbed correct into her centre.

"Though, the size might be a petty large for you."

Puaaah! She received an additional 1000 damage.

"If you sincerely like it, your master shall help alter it to your size tomorrow."

Puaaah! Her heart received long-lasting damage.

"I shall make some others for you while I'm at it as well. Mn… Yous seem to have grown a little fatter."

Puaaah! Her HP was emptied!

"My Disciple Died Yet Again" is one of the few titles that popped up multiple times when I started looking for recommendations for female-led xianxia novels (I really liked watching The Untamed, and really liked their female person characters, but more often than not came abroad wanting more of them. "My Disciple Died Withal Again" is 1 of the few titles that popped up multiple times when I started looking for recommendations for female person-led xianxia novels (I actually liked watching The Untamed, and actually liked their female person characters, only mostly came away wanting more than of them. Since the novel of that is going to have a while, I thought I'd try a few others.)

I feel like I could spend some time virtually how absolutely WILD it is, flailing about in the wildernesses of amateur translations. There's Then much weird drama, there'southward footnotes that go from passive aggressive (this translator only links to wikipedia, which I think is hilarious) to like, squeeing translator inserts, or footnotes that just don't exist for some ...more obscure content... simply there's clearly this community doing a lot of work for free on actually intense schedules, which is merely :O. I appreciate their work immensely.

Anyway what I am looking for in these xianxia novels (and finding) feels similar classic pulp - it'due south incredibly readable, the action moves along, and (perhaps this is dissimilar) there are character relationships yous want to encounter develop. In My Disciple Died Yet Again there's all those things and likewise a lot of humor, but oftentimes slapstick/cultural misunderstandings sort of thing. The best humor is when it's about someone being incredibly sincere and caring and going over the meridian. The worst is the characters that are mostly just fat jokes. Still, there does appear to be some heart in it, and I appreciate that and too the competent/accessible translation.

As well this is a serial of 12 books, not one, so I'g going to mark it every bit read/reread for however many books I really finish.

I quite like the MC, actually. There's just non much else about the plots or other characters that actually stands out much for me. I was holding on for some romance simply I realized that it wasn't going to happen any time soon. Many many many other things would get in the style and the progress was like watching a huge program loading on an sometime computer: futile and infuriating. I'll reserve my time for something more than worthwhile.

The book started off great. Unique plot, unexpected twist but so it got too draggy which is pretty common in chinese webnoles as I heard the authors there got paid based on the length of the book. Demand to get the yuan I guess.
